With around 700,000 students of Muslim faith in German schools, the question of school-based religious-ideological education is becoming ever more explosive in society. Since October 1999, the "Islamic instruction" school trial in North Rhine-Westphalia has offered an independent subject of Islamic instruction for the first time in individual schools. The performing and critical contributions profile this school experiment in its importance for the religious education debate in Germany.
