Niki de Saint Phalle setzte in ihrem einzigartigen uvre einen der Schwerpunkte auf spektakuläre, häufig groß dimensionierte Inszenierungen und Environments. Ihre Schießbilder, die begehbaren Nanas, der Strawinsky-Brunnen oder ihr Tarot-Garten sind virtuose Beispiele dafür. Ein vergleichbar imposantes Ensemble und ihr letztes vollendetes Großprojekt wurde zum künstlerischen Vermächtnis der im Frühjahr 2002 verstorbenen Niki de Saint Phalle: La Grotte, eine nach Plänen der Künstlerin neu gestaltete Grotte in Hannover, die seit April 2003 der Öffentlichkeit zugänglich ist.
La Grotte liegt im barocken Teil der Herrenhäuser Gärten, einer der schönsten Parkanlagen Deutschlands. 1676 erbaut, dienten die drei ursprünglich mit Muscheln, Kristallen, Glas und Mineralien geschmückten Räume als Ort der Verzauberung und als kühle Rückzugsmöglichkeit bei Hitze. Ihre Ausschmückungen wurden allerdings im 18. Jahrhundert entfernt. Zur EXPO 2000 wurde die Grotte restauriert und anschließend von Niki de Saint Phalle neu gestaltet. Der achteckige Mittelraum und die beiden rechts und links anschließenden Räume der Grotte wurden von ihr durch Mosaike aus buntem Glas und Spiegeln, mit Kieseln und zahlreichen bemalten, plastischen Figuren aus Fiberglas prachtvoll ausgeschmückt, wobei die spiralförmige Anordnung der Ornamente um die Säule im Eingangsraum Spiritualität symbolisieren, der westliche Spiegelraum Tag und Leben thematisiert, der östliche, blaue Raum dagegen Nacht und Kosmos.

The Herrenhäuser Gärten in Hanover belongs among the most beautiful parks in Germany. Its Grosser Garten was begun in 1666 and constitutes one of the most important baroque grounds in Europe. The north-western part of this treasure houses the grotto, built in 1676. The three rooms, originally decorated with mussels, crystals, glass and minerals, served as a place of enchantment and as a cool retreat on hot days. The decorations were removed as early as the eighteenth century, however, and afterwards the building was used as a permanent storeroom.
After its restoration for EXPO 2000, the inside of the grotto was newly designed according to plans by Niki de Saint Phalle, a project which was to become the last work in an unusual Oeuvre, since the artist died in the spring of 2002. The octagonal middle room and those to its left and right were splendidly decorated with mosaics made from colored glass and mirrors, with pebbles and numerous painted sculptures made of fibreglass. The spiral- shaped arrangement of the ornaments around the column in the entrance hall symbolizes spirituality, with the western mirrored room signifying day and life and the eastern blue room night and the cosmos.
