Rekombinante, das heißt mit Hilfe von Gentechnik maßgeschneiderte Proteine finden immer mehr medizinische Anwendungen, und gentechnisch hergestellte Arzneimittel sind außerordentlich erfolgreich bei Krankheiten, die bislang sehr schwer bis gar nicht zu behandeln waren. Der Weltmarkt für therapeutische Proteine umfaßte 1998 17 Mrd. US$ - Tendenz deutlich steigend. Über 200 solcher Proteine befinden sich derzeit in Forschung und Entwicklung, und zahlreiche werden in den nächsten Jahren hinzukommen.
