The theology of the icon is not confined to considerations on the transfiguration of beauty or the sacralization of art. It is part of the global edifice of Orthodox tradition. An ecumenical council, little-known and ill-favoured in Europe, issued a series of canons of dogma that place the icon on a par with the incarnation and the manifestation of the Word of God in our flesh. When iconography was beginning to lose its organic links with theology and liturgy, these canons were taken up and developed in local councils. In this book, Leonide Ouspensky tends toward a deeper interpretation of the mystery of the icon. He does so with his theologian's competence and his talent as an iconographer.
