Drawing from contemporary accounts, thus giving the human record, this is the story of the great Portuguese Age of Discovery. The volume contains seven pieces, themselves extracts from contemporary works and covers the opening of the ocean routes, the conquest of Brazil and the spread of Christianity. The seven texts are: "The Route to India" 1497-8 from "Vasco da Gama's First Voyage"; "The Discovery of Brazil" 1500; "The Lands of Prester John" 1520-6; "The Furthest East, 1537-8" from "The Voyages and Adventures of Fernand Mendes Pinto"; "The Tragic History of the Sea" 1552 and 1585; "The Jesuits in Abyssinia" from "A Voyage to Abyssinia"; and "Overland Return from India", 1663.
