Before the arrival of white culture, Indians moved freely under the big sky, gathered camas roots from the prairie, hunted elk along the wooded slopes, and quested after visions among the rugged snowcapped peaks. Fur trappers, miners, loggers, and homesteaders all left their mark upon the land. A new ranching culture emerged as settlers learned to live with the land and build sustainable communities.
