This report evaluates the IMF's economic research activities and whether they contribute successfully to the objectives of the organisation. It considers five basic issues central to the research process which relate to: organisational structure, culture, incentives and accountability, resource allocation and dissemination. The report concludes that there is room for improvement, and makes a number of recommendations which include setting priorities for research activities, and improving incentives and accountability in the research process.
