Full Description

The Jewish community of Latvia lived at the crossroads of East and West and was the home of such distinguished people as Isaiah Berlin and Serge Eisenstein. German culture and language dominated in the western part of the country while Russian influence dominated in the east. The ultra-orthodox Hasidic movement was prominent mainly in the east whereas secularism and Jewish Enlightenment dominated in the west. This book is a full history of the Jews of the region, from the first arrivals in the sixteenth century to the end of the twentieth, when the Holocaust and the second Soviet occupation resulted in the demise of the Jewish community in Larvia.
