Full Description
In this entertainingly far-fetched play, William Rowley combines tales of the origin of the town of St. Alban's with folklore about the craft of shoemaking. "A Shoemaker and A Gentleman is a comic history, drawing together the foundations of British nationhood, the establishment of the Church of England, and the beginnings of dynastic rule. As a playwright, Rowley is believed to have collaborated with other leading dramatists including John Ford, Thomas Heywood, and Thomas Middleton. This is the only available single-play edition of his tragic farce, which was first published in 1638.
