Full Description

Teaching Activities for Numeracy 5-11 provides an approach to the teaching of early numeracy which is both structured and progressive. It: * provides teachers with direction and purpose based upon clearly identifying where their students are, and a secure knowledge of where to take them * sets out a teaching approach which has been extensively developed through the Mathematics Recovery and Count Me In Too Projects in Australia, UK and US Five chapters set out detailed procedures for advancing children's learning across the stages - emergent, perceptual, figurative, initial number, and facile number; thereby developing increasingly sophisticated number strategies. Each chapter's teaching procedures are organized into key teaching topics, which include: * a clearly defined purpose * detailed teaching procedures and learning tasks * descriptions of application in whole class, small group and individualised settings * a link to the Learning Framework in Number Principles and procedures appropriate to a constructivist, enquiry-based approach are set out in chapters focusing on whole class teaching and on teaching individuals in specialist settings. The book is an extremely practical resource underpinned by a sound theoretical framework. The activities and approaches have been tried and tested by practitioners in the three continents and they can be used within the particular approaches of each country's numeracy strategy. Teaching Activities for Numeracy 5-11 complements and builds on the assessment of children's strategies documented in the authors' Early Numeracy (Sage, March 2000).
