Full Description

The future European system of social security and welfare is in need of a new perspective. Thanks to its conceptual and theoretical framework and its comparative empirical studies in eight European cities between Bologna and Stockholm, this book contributes to developing this new form of "social exclusion knowledge". Social security and welfare providers need to offer the infrastructure for the coping strategies developed for those in danger of being excluded. The objective is to find dynamic and multi-dimensional processes of (partial) exclusion and to identify the means of combatting it. As well as basic personal resources, the provision of local and situational means of coping is decisive. The studies featured in this volume - focusing on a range of problems of exclusion (for example poverty, housing, work, neighbourhood, position of family, women, migrants) in the context of different European welfare regimes - identify and assess the coping strategies and resources they need.
