Universities have been transformed from institutions subsidized by government to fulfil certain broad academic missions, to suppliers of specific teaching and research services available for direct purchase or for purchase by government on behalf of student consumers. This has led to a rapid growth of "enterprise" and "entrepreneurialism" as universities learned the art of financial survival in this new world. "Enterprise" has become a more explicit part of the higher education curriculum as part of the "employability" agenda. "Entrepreneurialism" requires different management styles and opens new areas for research. What has been the impact in universities and colleges of the new cultures of enterprise and entrepreneurialism?
