In seinem gesamten Werk hat sich der Fotograf Larry Sultan mit privaten, politischen und sozialen Facetten des "American dream" befasst. Dieses Buch versammelt zahlreiche Aufnahmen seiner drei bekanntesten Serien: "Pictures from Home", "The Valley" und "Homeland". Fast alle entstanden im kalifornischen San Fernando Valley, wo der Künstler aufwuchs. In "Pictures from Home" hat er über einen längeren Zeitraum das Leben seiner Eltern porträtiert, "The Valley" beschäftigt sich mit der kalifornischen Pornofilmindustrie, die sich in den typischen Suburbs angesiedelt hat. Und seine letzte Serie "Homeland" zeigt pastorale Landschaftsaufnahmen in sie hat Sultan mexikanische Tagelöhner integriert, die das trügerische Idyll auf merkwürdige Weise kommentieren.
Larry Sultan (1946-2009) lehrte seit 1978 Fotografie und war seit 1989 Professor für Kunst am California College of Arts and Crafts. Er erhielt u.a. mehrere National Endowments of the Arts und hatte Einzelausstellungen im Museum of Contemporary Art, Chicago, im Musée de l'Elysée, Lausanne, im San Francisco Museum of Modern Art und im Centre Georges Pompidou, Paris.

Larry Sultan lives and works in Marin County, CA. He was born in New York City in 1946. He received a BA from the University of California in 1968 and an MFA from the San Francisco Art Institute in 1973. He exhibited at the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, the University Art Museum, Berkley, the Corcoran Gallery of Art, Washington, DC, and the Museum of Modern Art, New York. He received awards from the National Endowment for the Arts in 1976, 1977, 1980, 1986, and 1992. He also received a Guggenheim Fellowship. Sultan is Professor of Art at the California College of Arts and Craft.
