The history of the kingdom of Naples is intimately tied to the history of Europe and reflects the intrigue, turmoil and bloody relations of the ruling dynasties and governments of the time. The interests of France, Britain, Austria, Spain are all reflected in the story of Naples. Pietro Colletta - a Neapolitan by birth - was involved as a soldier and political figure in many of the most important events of the time and his acclaimed "History of the Kingdom of Naple" records the history of the period with all the immediacy of somebody who was personally involved. It is still regarded as a key work for the period. The new introduction, by Professor John Davis, provides important context and makes available new material.
