An economic analysis of the emergence of mass spectator sport during the years prior to World War I, this study explores the tensions behind an increasingly commercialized activity that was suffused with "gentlemanly" values at many levels and highlights the manner in which this has changed.
An economic analysis of the emergence of mass spectator sport during the years prior to World War I, this study explores the tensions behind an increasingly commercialized activity that was suffused with "gentlemanly" values at many levels, and highlights the manner in which this has changed, as working class consumption and participation became predominant.
Consideration is given to the role of non-economic factors in influencing the market behaviour of both players and spectators, and particular attention is paid to professional sport as a career, with its associated risks of injury and premature retirement. The links between sport, gambling, crime and spectator violence are discussed and the author concludes football hooliganism has its roots in the so called "Golden Age" of sport in Britain.
